Accreditation and Licensure
When you are choosing a treatment center for yourself or a loved one, please ask the question: “Are you licensed and accredited?” This is important because there are treatment centers that may have pieces of their services accredited, but not their full continuum of care. Or, they may be licensed, but not accredited. People looking for addiction treatment centers are in crisis, and at New Directions for Women we want to educate and empower the person seeking help to go to reputable facilities.
Being accredited, licensed, and having professional memberships means that New Directions for Women adheres to best practices within the addiction treatment industry. You can have confidence in your decision for treatment at New Directions for yourself or your loved one that the quality of care is unsurpassed and that our results far exceed the national average. New Directions for Women is set apart from other drug treatment centers in Southern California because of our commitment to quality and improving the quality of life for the person served.
CARF Accreditation and ASAM Level of Care Certification
New Directions for Women is internationally accredited with the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). The mission of CARF is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through accreditation that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served. Accreditation was awarded after we passed an in-depth review of our drug and alcohol treatment services and demonstrated that they meet CARF’s internationally recognized standards.
Being accredited, either by CARF or JACHO, is not a requirement for treatment centers however we are committed to ensuring we are holding ourselves accountable to standards and learning from surveyors about emerging topics in the behavioral health field as a whole. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process. It has demonstrated to the team of surveyors during on-site visits, its commitment to offering programs and services that are measurable, accountable, and of the highest quality. In our most recent CARF accreditation visit, our surveyors shared strengths including the cleanliness and overall feeling the campus gives, likening it to a “warm hug.” They also appreciated our initiative in pilot programs including the NAATP outcomes study and ASAM certification. They noted our passion for reducing stigma and advocating for recovery in our community and having a Board of Directors/supporters that go above and beyond. The surveyors noted several times that our campus was safe, trauma-informed, home-like, reflective, and provided the highest quality of care.
As of 2019, we are also proud to announce we are ASAM Level of Care certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. This positions our program in a place of excellence with insurance companies, and managed care organizations who authorize treatment services. This certification independently verifies our ability to deliver services consistent with the levels of care described by ASAM, therefore matching patients to the right severity of treatment based on the progression of their substance use disorder.

DHCS Licensure
New Directions for Women is fully licensed and certified by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and is monitored by the Substance Use Disorder Division of that Department. DHCS oversees comprehensive health care, including mental health and drug treatment programs, for about 13 million Californians. New Directions for Women is licensed and certified to provide Residential substance use disorder treatment services for up to 34 women on our campus as well as social model detoxification services. In addition to our residential program, New Directions for Women is also certified to provide Intensive Outpatient and Day Treatment Services.

Certifications
New Directions for Women is honored to be the first non-Native Wellbriety certified site in the country. Wellbriety is a part of our healing curriculum through White Bison. Wellbriety helps women and families recover from unresolved grief and losses created by intergenerational trauma.
Requirements to be a Wellbriety certified addiction treatment center include:
- An annual visit of our facility by White Bison leadership
- Having at least one Native American National/state certified alcohol counselor as a part of our clinical team
- Having a relationship and ready access to at least one Native American elder for advice
- Ensuring that Native traditional healing practices are incorporated into treatment programs, including but not limited to: smudging, sweat lodge, naming ceremony, or healing ceremony, as appropriate for the person served
- Coordinating and ensuring staff have access to facilitator trainings on the Medicine Wheel and 12 steps, Mending Broken Hearts, and any other Wellbriety trainings that are facilitated by our staff
We chose to go through this certification because we serve not only Native American women, but women who have experienced intergenerational trauma that keeps their addiction festering. By understanding and healing this trauma, women can move forward in their recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Legitscript is a non-clinical certification we hold. Our primary objective is to provide life-changing addiction treatment services to women, and we’re motivated by a sincere desire to help women and their families find a new way to live. In 2018, the major search engines (like Google and Bing) and social media sites like Facebook began suspending addiction treatment ads to limit the public’s exposure to ineffective or unethical drug and alcohol rehabs. We have undergone the comprehensive LegitScript certification process to participate in online advertising in the addiction treatment space. Many people who are looking for effective addiction treatment rely on Google or social media to find a quality drug and alcohol rehab. We want to be front and center in the online advertising space so women and families can find us to heal from substance use disorder.
Memberships
New Directions for Women is a proud member of the Sober Living Network of California and is an active member of the Sober Living Coalition of Orange County. The primary mission of the Sober Living Network is to promote the establishment, successful management and growth of high quality sober living homes and other community-based recovery services. New Directions for Women operates an Intensive Sober Living, meaning women in that home also attend NDFW clinical programs.
The National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers, NAATP, is the trade organization for the addiction treatment and recovery profession. New Directions for Women is a member in good standing , and we appreciate their work as a convening body to bring our industry together to learn about best practices, network with other ethical programs, and learn about clinical and operational resources as well as law and policy advocacy.
New Directions for Women is a charter member of the Treatment Professionals in Alumnae Services (TPAS). Being involved with this professional membership organization allows us to collaborate with other addiction treatment center alumnae staff, and discuss best practices in engaging with alumnae for lifelong recovery outcomes. Our alumnae program consists of free lifetime support for women who have come through New Directions for Women, including weekly meetings, fun community events, opportunities to be of service to current patients, and monitoring calls by staff up to two years post discharge.
Our Intake Coordinator Victoria Herbert is a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists (AIS). This network of interventionists guide family members through the process of an intervention, which is an opportunity to help a person addicted to drugs and/or alcohol (or other compulsive behaviors) accept help, who is currently unwilling. By participating in AIS, Victoria exceeds educational and performance standards for her intervention work, and our clinical/intake team has a network of interventionists to refer to.
