Watch the full interview with New Directions for Women alumna Joy to hear about her life after alcohol rehab and how the alumnae network and aftercare programs made a difference.
One of the most common questions women have before entering treatment is: “What happens after rehab?” The fear of relapse, isolation, or losing the support that felt so vital during treatment can be daunting. At New Directions for Women, recovery doesn’t end at discharge. Structured alumnae programs and ongoing support are integral to helping women maintain sobriety, stay connected, and continue thriving long after leaving the facility. Joy’s story provides a powerful example of how life after rehab can be full of growth, connection, and lasting recovery.
Positive Outcomes After Treatment
For Joy, completing the New Directions program was just the beginning. The tools she gained during treatment—peer support, structured routines, and personalized recovery strategies—allowed her to integrate sobriety into her daily life.
“I would say absolutely everything is positive. I can’t think of a single negative aspect of it. I’m back in AA, working the steps, working the program. I go to a minimum of three live meetings, and I try to do Zoom meetings in the morning that New Directions had with the 7 a.m. attitude adjustment meeting. I have a very strong program—one that I’m willing to keep and maintain. I reach out to other alcoholic women in the program, meet up with them, send little notes of encouragement, and do a book study with my sponsor and all of her other sponsors weekly. I wouldn’t say it’s a rigid program, but definitely one I maintain.”
By maintaining consistent routines and connections, Joy has created a sustainable recovery practice that works for her lifestyle.
“Life happens—work, commitments—but the goal for all of us is to be productive members of society and live a life that has meaning and value. I put recovery first, and even if I miss a meeting, I know there’s another one I can go to. With Zoom, I can go to one every hour on the hour if I needed to.”
Alumni Support After Rehab: Staying Connected and Supported
One of the most powerful elements of New Directions’ program is its alumnae network. These ongoing meetings provide a safe, structured space for women to share challenges, celebrate successes, and lean on each other—long after discharge.
“I really enjoy the weekly alumni meetings. A lot of the alumni come back, and we have a meeting in the big room with the current residents. It’s nice to be able to show that I’ve recovered, that I am thriving, but I can also share whatever’s troubling me—or even cry on someone’s shoulder if I need to. It’s such a safe, non-judgmental space. I look forward to Thursday nights.”
Alumnae meetings reinforce the women’s addiction recovery community, allowing women to continue receiving peer support while mentoring newer participants. Joy emphasizes how this ongoing connection prevents isolation and fosters accountability.
“Another amazing thing is seeing the current residents and knowing I can be there for them, just as I had support when I was in treatment. It creates a sense of purpose and community that helps me stay on track.”
Advice to Women Considering Alcohol Rehab
For women considering treatment, knowing that support continues after discharge can be a critical factor in deciding to seek help. Joy encourages women to embrace rehab fully and trust that long-term resources will be available.
“Run. Go there right now. Join. Pack a bag. If you don’t have a bag, don’t worry—there are some donations there. It was such an eye-opener and fulfilling. Programs like this, especially for women with children, give the time and space to heal. Even after you leave, the alumni program and support systems are incredible. It’s a caring place.”
Her message is clear: recovery is not a one-time event but a journey supported by community, structure, and ongoing connection.
“It’s so amazing to know that even though I finished the program, I can still get help anytime I need it. There’s a whole community that continues to support women like me in recovery.”
