At New Directions for Women, the heart of addiction recovery for women lies in witnessing the small and profound ways women reclaim their lives. Transformation doesn’t happen all at once—it is a series of moments, some subtle, some life-changing. Heather Black-Coyne, LMFT, CADC II, Executive Director at New Directions, shares her perspective on recognizing transformation and the joy it brings to the staff and clients alike.
Signs of Transformation in Women’s Recovery Stories
Heather describes a simple but powerful indicator that transformation is taking place: laughter.
“I know when transformation is happening when I hear women start laughing together. Sometimes I will be and not to sound like a creep on the other side of a wall or a door and I’ll overhear a conversation and overhear giggles and I smile. My heart smiles because there’s life starting to be restored back into that individual. This will be somebody who was not laughing for days or weeks leading up to this. You will hear them start to joke. You’ll see them be a little bit more peppy in their step. You’ll see them talking to somebody else or bringing somebody else into a topic or an idea. But it’s the giggling for me. When I hear women giggling again, I know that transformation is happening.”
In addiction therapy for women, these small moments are just as important as major milestones. Noticing when a woman reconnects with her sense of humor, engages socially, or begins to participate fully in her recovery is a key sign that change is taking root.
Big and Small Wins: Examples of Rehab Success Stories
Heather highlights how transformation can take many forms, from everyday interactions to life-changing achievements:
“If I come to property on a Thursday night, which is my favorite, and I get so excited when I walk in and I see alumni that wave me down and say, ‘Hey, Heather, I’m taking nine months tonight,’ and they’ll tell me some funny story and we laugh together. Or we will remember some funny story from when they were in treatment and we will laugh together. So being able to reflect on themselves in a way that has some humor and participate and engage in the world in a more light-hearted way is the epitome of transformation among other things of course. And I can share stories about people’s lives turning all the way around, people’s views towards the world turning all the way around. I can share about women getting their children back. I can share about women having reunification with their parents or their loved ones in a way that results in tears, hugs, maybe something they haven’t done for a long time.”
These women’s recovery stories highlight how addiction recovery for women can lead to restored relationships, renewed confidence, and emotional healing. Both the small victories, like laughter and engagement, and the profound successes, like family reunification, reflect the depth of transformation possible through dedicated treatment.
The Everyday Moments that Reflect Transformation in Addiction Therapy for Women
Heather emphasizes that transformation isn’t only about big milestones; it’s also about the daily moments that show progress:
“Transformation happens regularly in so many ways and in those big ways that I mentioned every day often. I just don’t want to miss the small ways, the giggling, talking to another person, sharing in group. These ways in which they come out of their shell and start to feel who they are, own who they are, and present it to the world.”
For women in recovery, reclaiming their personality, their confidence, and their ability to interact with others authentically is a critical part of healing. Recognizing and celebrating these moments encourages continued growth and reinforces the value of treatment.
